Getting Around in Bermuda & Transportation
Bermuda is safe to go around and you can pretty much use any mode of transportation without worrying about theft or safety. Non-residents are not allowed to drive in Bermuda so rentals cars are not an option on the island. Besides rental cars, there are still quite many modes of transportation to choose from:
1. Bermuda Taxis
As most other destinations, taxis are easily found all over the island at resorts, airports and other popular tourist sites. We however, do not recommend heavy use of taxis, as they are relatively expensive. They charge per distance, number of people and pieces of baggage. To give you an idea it cost us $30 for a 10 min drive from the airport to St. George Club & resort for 5 adults and 5 carry-on bags. There are no uber’s in Bermuda.
2. Rent a scooter, moped, motor vehicle or a bicycle
This is one of the easiest ways to get around the island at your own convenience. This mode of transportation was popular among the tourists and commonly seen around the island. There are several motor vehicle rental companies across the island and vehicles can be rented for a couple hours or couple days at fair rates. Gears such as helmets and lock baskets are also provided. Scooters and bicycles are also allowed on some of the ferry routes thus making it convenient to explore the winding roads of the island. Keep in mind that Bermuda is left hand drive.
3. Rent a twizy electric mini car
This two seat electric car is a rare opportunity for a fun ride around the island at your own pace. These are available for rent from certain hotel properties. Prior to renting, ensure to collect information on the charging stations across the island. Again, it will be left hand drive.
4. Bus service
Alternatively, you could also hop on and off the public buses to explore the island. There are 11 bus zones that cover the main roads throughout the island and leave at a frequency of 20 to 30 minutes. The buses are easy to spot as they are painted in pink with blue stripes matching the color of their coast. Bus tickets/tokens can be purchased from the visitor’s center or the post office. Download a copy of the bus schedule.
5. Ferry Service
Ferries are one of the best ways of getting around the island while enjoying great views of the Bermudian coastline. The island operates 4 ferry routes each distinguished by its own unique color – Blue, Orange, Green and Pink route. Two routes are most famous among tourists:
- Orange route that operates between the Dockyard and St. George – 40 minute ride
- Blue route which operates between the Dockyard and Hamilton – 20 minute ride.
Just like buses, ferry tickets/token can be purchased in advance from the visitor’s center or the post office. Download the ferry schedule.
Tip: It is cheaper to purchase a sheet of tickets that contains 15 tickets as opposed to purchasing single tickets. It is recommended to purchase tickets in advance, as it is more expensive to pay for the ride in cash while on the ferry.
